Shielding Design Overview

Creating a radiation shielding design is an essential component in planning new radiographic, fluoroscopic, CT, or nuclear medicine installations in your department.  Our goal is to deliver the most cost efficient shielding plan that will exceed regulatory requirements and prove effective in providing protection to the general public as well as your staff.

Our Shielding Designs

We start with the end in mind and work hard to achieve a cost effective and efficient design for your new space.  As a Qualified Expert for radiation shielding designs, we have seen it all.  Our understanding of the unique challenges associated with lead barrier installations and have enabled us to work with architects and engineers to meet challenges specific to shielding installations.

We Make the Process Seamless. From Beginning to End.

After filling out a short questionnaire, we can get right to work on your shielding design.  If you have questions about what is required, we can usually tidy those up with a quick phone conversation.  We typically have shielding designs completed within 1 week to give you a fast turnaround when you’re on a tight timeline.  We always provide a comprehensive and understandable shielding design as well as a floor map detailing lead barrier specifications so you know exactly how much shielding to install.

We’re not done until you are.  After you have received your Shielding Design, we follow through with your Architect, Engineer, or General Contractor should any questions arise around where, how much, what type, or how to install your barriers.  We’re fully invested in ensuring you are satisfied with the final product.

How Much Does a Shielding Design Cost?

The cost of a Shielding Design may vary based on the modality and type of installation. For the most accurate estimate, you may contact us here or give us a call at 253-254-6988 to talk through the specifics of your project.

Do You Need Help With Your Regulatory Agency?

If you find yourself overwhelmed or not sure how to submit your shielding design, you can rest assured that we have years of experience working directly with regulators and can submit your shielding design on your behalf.

Shielding Requirements

Shielding is often required to protect members of the public and staff from the hazards associated with ionizing radiation.  In addition, many states and accreditation agencies require a shielding design be completed by a Qualified Expert before construction begins on a room containing ionizing radiation.  For facilities accredited by The Joint Commission, Radiation Shielding Designs are required for CT, PET, and Nuclear Medicine.  All of our shielding designs follow the National Council of Radiation Protection guidelines, so you can rest assured that you will always be within regulatory requirements.  If you have questions about whether you are required to have a shielding design, feel free to drop us a line.

Do You Have to Have a Radiation Survey After Installation?

As with most things in life, the answer is “It depends.”  Many states and accrediting bodies do require a confirmatory Radiation Survey after construction of the barrier is complete.  It’s best to reach out to us directly so we can give you guidance on whether a confirmatory Radiation Survey is required for your situation.  Generally speaking, even if a confirmatory survey is not required by your regulatory or accreditation agency, it is still a good idea to have complete confidence that the shielding was installed as it was designed.  We have seen many rooms with gaps, voids, and/or other penetrations in the barrier.  It is best to find these before the room is put into use instead of finding out years later that the shielding you thought was there…wasn’t.  If you need a shielding integrity evaluation to ensure shielding was installed as designed, feel free to reach out to see how we can help you.

What We Shield

Everything!  Whether it’s radioactive material or machine-produced radiation, we can design a shield to protect you from the hazards associated with ionizing radiation.
